Introduction to Towards 2010

Towards 2010 is an action plan to improve health and social care in Sandwell and the heart of Birmingham.

It is being developed by Heart of Birmingham teaching Primary Care Trust, Sandwell Primary Care Trust and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, working with Birmingham City Council, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Trust, Sandwell Mental Health NHS & Social Care Trust and West Midlands Ambulance Trust.

People who live in this area tend to have worse health than in many other parts of England.

They have told us they want to be healthier and receive treatment more quickly, closer to home and in better surroundings.

We have a unique opportunity to make this happen because many of our buildings are getting old and extra Government money means we can afford to replace them.

We’re proposing major changes to health and social care and think this is the best way to meet local people’s needs.

It also fits closely with the Government’s latest thinking about the NHS and social care.

Our proposals are ambitious and draw from experience elsewhere.

We will test each major new service development and check our progress through rigorous external reviews before we make each major decision.
